Corporate Social Responsibility

Stikeman Elliott enjoys a long tradition of promoting corporate social responsibility. We maintain several programs in our undertaking to be good corporate citizens.

Diversity & Inclusion

The firm is committed to a diverse and inclusive environment, and to promoting diversity initiatives in the communities in which we work. The pillars of our program include extensive community outreach to diverse communities, recruiting the best talent from diverse communities through partnerships with law schools and student organizations, employee engagement and leadership building initiatives, initiatives aimed at fostering an inclusive and supportive environment, and leveraging our diversity to grow our business and partner with clients, all with the aim of enhancing our overall cultural fluency at all levels of leadership within the firm. In 2011 we embarked on a complete review of our diversity and inclusion practices, with an eye towards the next frontier in diversity best practices in our industry and beyond. Our partnership with the Law Firm Diversity & Inclusion Network, a group of well-known Canadian law firms committed to the advancement of diversity and inclusion in the legal profession, confirms this dedication to promoting diversity and inclusion within the firm and the broader legal industry. The firm is repeatedly selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers in workplace surveys undertaken by Mediacorp in partnership with the Globe & Mail.

Women's Initiatives

We are immensely proud of the role that women play in the firm - both as role models and as leaders in their areas of practice. Some of our specific programs to promote women's success in the firm include focused business development, skills training and networking events, mentorship programs, progressive policies on maternity leave, telecommuting and flexible hours, and individual transition coaching for women returning to work.

Community & Pro Bono

With the firm's support and encouragement through our local office Community Involvement & Pro Bono programs, many of our firm members make a significant contribution to their communities. Our programs include support for grass roots initiatives, pro bono representation and charitable causes, including firm matched donations. We enjoy long-standing relationships with the United Way, Bell Walk for Kids Help Phone, First Nations Child & Family Caring Society, the Ottawa Hospital, Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation/Run for the Cure, the "Défi corporatif" Canderel, Montréal Children's Hospital Foundation, Brown Bagging for Calgary's Kids, Inn From the Cold and the Terry Fox Run, among many others.

Environment

Stikeman Elliott's GoingGreen program is part of our ongoing effort to build environmental awareness among firm members to achieve measurable results in the areas of waste reduction, recycling and energy efficiency. Launched in 2008, the program involves the firm wide implementation of market-leading environmental best practices, coordinated by a Green Committee in each office, with membership from a broad cross section of firm members.
