Community & Pro Bono

Stikeman Elliott takes an active role in our community through  various volunteer involvement and sponsorship  programs. Our offices have been recognized for their efforts on several occasions, including receiving a 2009 Volunteer Calgary Leadership Award (Calgary), the United Way's Quantum Leap Donors Award 2009 (Vancouver) and  various other special recognitions from Canadian organizations, including Daily Bread Foodbank for outstanding contributions (Toronto) and Canadian Blood Services for our commitment to the Partners for Life program.

Stikeman Elliott actively encourages firm member volunteerism through a number of programs that support their community involvement activities. These include:

  • Firm matching donations for volunteer work: The firm will make a donation for each hour of volunteer work completed by staff, law clerks, associates and articling students for a registered charity up to $600/year/person;

  • Firm matching donations for charitable board membership: The firm will match donations of up to $5,000/year/person for firm members who sit on charitable boards and who also make a financial contribution;

  • Grass roots initiatives: The firm offers support for members who take the lead in organizing and promoting firm member involvement, which could include the provision of tee shirts, boardroom use, email coordination and financial support; and 

  • Pro bono legal advice: The firm fully supports the provision of pro bono legal services and our lawyers have a history of pro bono work for a number of Canadian organizations.

Below are some of the many initiatives and organizations that Stikeman Elliott supports in order to help make a difference in our communities.

Recent Initiatives

Stikeman Elliott supports many charitable events and causes. Some of our recent initiatives include:

  • Stikeman Elliott teams participating in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer to support cancer research, treatment and care programs at partner hospitals; 

  • Participating with 14 other business law firms from around the world in a UN-led study of how corporate law practices contribute to corporate cultures that respect human rights;

  • Organizing and participating in the annual Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research in New York - Ken Ottenbreit, the office's managing principal, founded the New York run in 1994 and is the run director. The firm was also the top law firm supporter of the Terry Fox Foundation in Ontario for 2008;

  • Sponsoring a Stikeman Elliott team in all Canadian offices for the Run for the Cure for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation;

  • Registering with the Canadian Blood Services' Partners for Life program and participating in its Corporate Challenge event;

  • Supporting the "Défi corporatif" Canderel; 

  • Supporting the annual edition of "Pedal for Kids" for the Montréal Children's Hospital; and

  • Partnering with Inn from the Cold in their efforts to eliminate homelessness in Calgary. This unique partnership led to the development of the Kids Inn Play program.

Ongoing Pro Bono Services

Stikeman Elliott lawyers provide ongoing pro bono services to many organizations throughout Canada. Our pro bono activities include:

  • Acting on several boards, including the Kidney Foundation, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (National and Quebec Chapters), the Montréal Children's Hospital Foundation, the Sainte-Justine Hospital Foundation, Canada's National History Society, Action contre la faim, Dans la Rue, the Vecova Centre for Disability Services and Research, Inn from the Cold and Comité Priorité Violence Conjugale;

  • Partnering with law students at the Osgoode Business Clinic to provide ongoing legal advice to clients who are implementing new business ideas, or are growing their emerging businesses, but cannot afford necessary legal services;

  • Acting as pro bono counsel for LUMINATO, a 10-day International Arts Festival in Toronto highlighting the best of Canadian and international theatre, opera, art, film, literature, cuisine, wine, dance, fashion, and music;

  • Providing pro bono legal counsel to many other organizations, including Foster Parents Plan Canada (Plan Canada), the Sierra Club of Canada - Ontario Chapter, the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation and the Entrepreneurship Centre of the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (OCRI), Habitat for Humanity, Autism Society Canada, Foundation for International Community Assistance Canada, BOOST Butterfly Foundation; and

  • Remaining active in pro bono litigation, representing various parties at all court levels, including The Canadian Association for Community Living and Community Living Ontario (the intervenors in Wynberg v. Ontario), First Nations Child & Family Caring Society and the Council for Canadians With Disabilities.
