Stikeman Elliott
Oil & Gas

Stikeman Elliott has an extensive domestic and international oil and gas practice. We have a leading team of energy lawyers in our Calgary office, with seamless access to national and international coverage through our offices across Canada and abroad.

We have acted as trusted advisors on many of the energy sector's most complex undertakings, from the financing and development of major projects to ongoing operations. Businesses turn to us for expert counsel relating to the exploration, production and refining of conventional oil and gas, oil sands and shale gas as well as the extraction, transportation, processing, storage and marketing of crude oil, bitumen, natural gas, natural gas liquids and liquefied natural gas (LNG) on a worldwide basis.

Stikeman Elliott lawyers have extensive experience in energy regulatory matters throughout Canada. We have substantial experience as counsel before the National Energy Board, the Alberta Energy Regulator (and its predecessor entities), the Ontario Energy Board, the British Columbia Utilities Commission, the Manitoba Public Utilities Board and other federal and provincial regulators. We appear frequently in proceedings relating to the permitting of oil and gas pipelines, gas processing facilities, petrochemical plants and oil sands developments, often involving the application and interpretation of environmental legislation.

Extensive Sector Expertise

Our lawyers have substantial expertise with all aspects of the oil and gas sector. We have specific experience with conventional oil and gas properties, and have designed numerous processes to purchase and sell upstream oil and gas assets over the years. In addition, we are highly experienced with midstream facilities including pipeline systems, upgraders, refineries, extraction facilities, LNG terminals and related infrastructure.

We have represented numerous developers, owners and operators of energy projects involving oil sands assets. Stikeman Elliott's Energy Group has participated in a broad range of transactions involving the investment in, and financing of, oil sands projects and related infrastructure. We frequently represent both buyers and sellers of interests in oil sands projects through purchase and sale transactions, and have participated in the acquisition of oil sands rights through Crown land sales.

We are also active in the emerging shale gas industry. We have worked with large multinational entities in relation to the acquisition and development of shale gas plays, and have structured joint venture arrangements to facilitate inbound investment into this growing sector.

We regularly represent marketers of petroleum substances and entities providing oil and gas field services including seismic, drilling and well fractionation services on both physical and financial transactions.
