For summer positions, we hire students who have completed their 2nd year of law school or their 3rd year of a 4-year program. We view the summer as a great opportunity for you to get a broad exposure to the practice areas in which you're interested, as we recognize that it's still early in your career.
Some of the highlights of our summer programs include:
Flexibility During the Summer: We give you the opportunity to "design your own summer" at the firm. We don't have formal rotations during the summer, so you can have a varied work experience or focus on one practice area, depending on your interests.
Mentorship Program: We view our mentorship program as being a cornerstone to our student program. You'll be matched with a mentor from your practice area of interest. Your mentor will be instrumental in the work that you're involved in when you first join us, and will provide you with hands-on career development advice and support throughout the summer.
Work Allocation and Responsibility: You'll get lots of responsibility which will help you to develop your practice skills and knowledge of law and you will be supported by top notch people and technological resources. Much of your work will come from your mentor and from the lawyers from whom you seek out work. You'll meet every other week as a group with the Director of Associate and Student Programs to discuss workload, and will discuss work with your mentor as well, which will help you to maintain a balanced workload.
Continuing Legal Education Program: We have a CLE program for summer students that includes: in-house seminars, seminars conducted by external organizations we invite to the firm, and a practice area lunch series with students and lawyers. Our CLE programming helps you gain important legal skills and practical knowledge.
Evaluation Process: The Director of Associate and Student Programs collects review feedback from the lawyers you have worked with and then meets with each student once during the summer to discuss the feedback. The lawyers you're working with will also provide you with ongoing, informal feedback, which will assist with your continued development. At the end of the summer term, we ask you to evaluate your summer experience, which helps the firm to continually improve our summer program.
Knowledge Management (KM): Students have access to an innovative portal-based intranet, searchable KM system, cutting-edge precedents and an extensive electronic and print library collection.
Skills Retreat: Summer students are encouraged to attend the Student Skills Retreat weekend in Toronto, in the form of a comprehensive CLE program which offers hands-on assignments, as well as seminars covering basic legal processes and issues students may expect to encounter.
Summer Student Compensation
Salary: Our summer program compensation philosophy is to pay our students at the forefront of our market. Currently, our summer students are paid $4,167 per month.
Fitness Membership: Summer students are entitled to be reimbursed up to the amount of $200 for health club membership fees or other similar fitness-related expenses.
Tuition/Books Bonus: If an articling position is accepted with Stikeman Elliott, we contribute up to $7,000 towards your third-year tuition costs and books.
