Professional Development

We are committed to the continuous development and education of our lawyers and students. We believe that this is best achieved by a mix of "hands-on" experience and formal training, as well as strong formal and informal mentoring relationships.

"On the Job" One-on-One Training

By far your greatest opportunities for learning occur on the files you are involved in. With "on the job" training, you gain experience by observing what more experienced lawyers do, and by acting on feedback and "on the fly" directions you'll get from the lawyers you are working with. As a result, we feel that the best "training" is simply to work on a variety of matters with different lawyers in your first few years. We are committed to the continuous development and education of our lawyers and students. We believe that this is best achieved by a mix of "hands-on" experience and formal training, as well as strong formal and informal mentoring relationships.

CLE Programmes and Current Awareness

To supplement your "on the job" learning, we have a CLE Committee which develops substantive seminars that are tailored to the needs of our associates at the various stages in their careers. We have developed and are working to continuously improve our extensive orientation, development and skills-based training programmes, to ensure that they are relevant to our lawyers and students. In addition, our superb current awareness programmes help ensure that our lawyers and students are always on top of current developments in the law.

Mentors

Our mentoring program is a key element of our associate training and development. It applies to all associates with less than three years' experience, as well as lateral hires who have been with the firm for less than one year. The main objectives of the programs are to promote development and integration of young lawyers within the firm, to help them get acquainted with the culture of the firm, to provide informal supervision of and support at the office and to serve as a resource to assist with the personal and professional progression of young lawyers within the firm.

In addition to their formal mentor, our associates quickly develop a network of informal mentoring relationships which provide them with valuable insight and guidance throughout their careers.

Our mentoring program is supported by a group of multidisciplinary lawyers from different practice groups responsible for training, assignment of mentors and the coordination of different activities for mentors and protégés.

Our Associates Committee

The associates Committee is comprised of partners and associates from all of our practice groups. The Committee meets monthly and is responsible for overseeing the recruitment, training, professional development and progression of our associates.
