Frequently Asked Questions

Here we have tried to address some of the questions frequently asked by students. Do not hesitate to contact Nadine Boileau, Director, Students Programs, at (514) 397-3124 if there is anything else you'd like to know.

What are your main areas of practice as a firm?
Our lawyers are renowned experts in their respective fields of practice. They work in broadly defined practice groups, coming together in different multi-disciplinary teams on virtually every project.

We sometimes hear from students that, because we are a top Canadian business law firm, we must mainly practice corporate law. It is true that we have a first class corporate/securities practice. But to serve the diverse needs of the increasingly complex business and financial communities, we have a top-flight litigation practice and expertise in a broad range of other practice areas including litigation, tax, competition, real estate, environmental, employment and labour law, and information technology and intellectual property. Whether you're interested in corporate law or in areas other than corporate law or whether you're still undecided about what you want to do, we encourage you to read more about our practice areas and about what we can offer.

How many lawyers work at Stikeman Elliott?
Our Montréal office totals approximately 145 lawyers. Overall, close to 450 lawyers staff our Montréal, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, Ottawa, New York, London and Sydney offices.

How many articling interviews does the Montréal office grant?
Each year we meet between 125 and 150 candidates for a first interview and more than a third of them will be called for a second interview.

How many articling students do you hire?
We recruit between 10 and 15 articling students every year.

How is the physical layout at the office for students and stagiaires?
Summer students are grouped in teams of three or four in large offices usually located on the same floor as the practice group to which they are assigned. Each student has a modular workstation, a phone, voicemail and a computer.

Articling students work in groups of two in each office and also have a phone, voicemail, computer and Blackberry or iPhone. All students and articling students have access to a laptop computer when necessary and all online tools are at their disposal from their workstation.
