The "Spotlight on Board Diversity" event was attended by business leaders who participated in a Q&A discussion about board renewal and corporate governance issues that are directly connected to the need for greater representation of diversity on corporate boards.

JANUARY 2017 - Stikeman Elliott is pleased to welcome two new members to the partnership. As of January 1, 2017, Jeff Hershenfield is a partner in Toronto, and Stephanie Weschler is a partner in Montréal.
Jeff Hershenfield is a member of the Corporate Group. He has a broad capital markets practice with a focus on securities, mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, corporate governance and derivatives, as well as general corporate and commercial law. He has acted for private equity funds, financial institutions, investment fund managers, boards of directors and special committees in numerous public and private M&A transactions, issuers and securities dealers in a wide range of public and private corporate finance transactions, and advises on cross-border securities offerings, M&A transactions, corporate governance and securities regulatory compliance matters. Jeff is a member of the firm's M&A/Negotiated Transactions Group, Securities Practice Group and the Structured Financial Products and Derivatives Group and sits on the firm's Student Committee.
Stephanie Weschler is a member of the Employment and Labour Group in Montréal. Her practice is focused on all aspects of employment law, with a particular emphasis on advising public and private companies on the employment and labour law aspects of purchase and sale transactions. Stephanie has strong expertise in private equity firm acquisitions and divestitures as well as in cross-border matters, acting for clients throughout Canada, the US and internationally purchasing targets in Canada. Ross MacDonald and Noordin Nanji appointed Queen's counsel in British Columbia
DECEMBER 2016 - Congratulations to Ross MacDonald and Noordin Nanji on their recent Queen's counsel appointment, announced last week by British Columbia's Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Suzanne Anton.
The QC designation is conferred each year on members of the legal profession to recognize exceptional merit and contribution. Successful candidates are nominated by their peers after which an advisory committee reviews applications and makes recommendations to the Attorney General. The appointments were made by cabinet through orders-in-council.
Ross was one of six lawyers who opened the Vancouver office of Stikeman Elliott in 1988 and has been Managing Partner of the office for the past 18 years. Leading a formidable commercial real estate practice, Ross's work has been behind every development project that has shaped the city of Vancouver and surrounding Lower Mainland since the early 1990s.
Noordin, in addition to being a leading corporate lawyers in BC, is former Chairman of the Aga Khan International Conciliation and Arbitration Board, and current Chairman of the Vancouver General Hospital and UBC Hospital Foundation.

DECEMBER 2016 - Stikeman Elliott's Toronto office is pleased to co-host a lunch seminar featuring keynote speaker Canada's Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, the Honourable Navdeep Bains, with Women in Capital Markets (WCM) on Wednesday, December 14. The event titled "Bill C-25: How This Proposed Law Could Boost the Ranks of Women in Boardrooms", will focus on the Bill C-25, which includes specific measures that focus on the drive to increase the presence of under-represented groups on corporate boards and in senior-management ranks of publicly traded companies in Canada.

for being honoured for the third year in a row with the Women's Executive Network's 2016 Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100 award. Samantha was recognized in the "KPMG Professionals" category, which recognizes women who play a leadership role within their organization and communities.
Samantha is an active leader in the legal community and in promoting the advancement of women; she is a member of the Women in Capital Markets and Women's Association of Venture and Equity organization, and a founding and executive member of the Canadian Women in Private Equity Committee of the Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association. Lawson Hunter receives Lifetime Achievement award
SEPTEMBER 2016 - Congratulations to Lawson Hunter, the recipient of the Chambers Canada - Lifetime Achievement award at this year's Chambers Canada Awards ceremony held on September 29 in Toronto.
This award recognizes a long-standing and influential member of the Canadian Bar, whose prominent practice and global renown sets him or her apart as a leading lifetime practitioner. The award is based on 15 years of research interviews into the Canadian market, including recommendations from peers and other commentators, as well as length of time and position in the Chambers rankings. For Mr. Hunter, this award recognizes his outstanding career and experience in Canadian business, government and private practice. His impressive track record includes: Commissioner of the Competition Bureau from 1981 to 1985, where he played a significant role in the drafting of the Federal Competition Act; heading our Competition and Foreign Investment Group for over ten years; serving as the Executive Vice-President and Chief Corporate Officer of Bell Canada and BCE Inc. from 2003 to 2008; and his continued practice as counsel in our Ottawa office advising Canadian and multinational corporations on all areas of federal regulatory law and policy.

AUGUST 2016 - Once again Stikeman Elliott is at the forefront of innovation, acting for Dundee Acquisitions Ltd., the first special purpose acquisition corporation (SPAC) to be listed in Canada. Dundee is entering into a proposed business combination with CHC Student Housing Corp., which is the only publicly listed student housing corporation listed in Canada.

Quentin Markin moves global mining practice to Vancouver
VANCOUVER, July 5, 2016 - Stikeman Elliott is pleased to announce that, after nearly five years in the firm's Sydney office, Quentin Markin has returned to Canada, joining Vancouver's Corporate Group to continue his global mining practice.
In Vancouver, Quentin will remain co-head of the firm's Global Mining Group. His focus will continue to be on securities and M&A work, servicing mining companies in Canada, Australia, Asia and elsewhere, as well as underwriters and other financial services providers.

The massive wildfires currently ravaging parts of Alberta have triggered the largest fire related evacuation in the province's history. More than 70,000 people have been evacuated from more than 12 northern communities including Fort McMurray where the fires have destroyed most homes and businesses.
