Firm Initiatives

Find a strong sense of community

At Stikeman Elliott, our commitment to Diversity & Inclusion, Environmental Sustainability and Community & Pro Bono are integral parts of who we are. These objectives are at the root of all our initiatives and are reflected in the mandates of our firmwide Diversity & Inclusion Committee, Women’s Initiatives Committee and Community Involvement Committee.

Diversity and inclusion

We prioritize diversity and inclusion in recruiting, retaining, developing and promoting top talent. In July 2020, we signed the BlackNorth Initiative’s Law Firm Pledge led by the Canadian Council of Business Leaders Against Anti-Black Systemic Racism and committed to specific goals designed to end systemic racism by creating opportunities for those in underrepresented Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) communities.

We also have many longstanding initiatives in place to enhance the advancement of women and never lose sight of the need to continue developing and innovating our approach, including unconscious bias training for firm members and working closely with organizations, including law student affinity groups and campus associations. Our belief is that to effect real change, our people must take personal accountability to help create an environment in which more women can succeed.

Wellness and mental health

To promote an environment of well-being where firm members can thrive, we bring together our focus on wellness and mental health under the key pillars of stress management, physical activity, nutrition, and emotional resilience and grit. We have a continuous focus on enhancing mental health benefits and currently offer students:

  • A wellness spending account.
  • Paid vacation.
  • Educational seminars on wellness and mental health topics, such as time management, financial planning, and mental health in law.

Community and pro bono

Our innovative Community Involvement Program is designed to encourage firm member volunteerism at all levels, by building on the three key pillars of our grassroots initiative: offering matching donations programs, supporting individuals who champion for causes that are meaningful to them and providing invaluable pro bono legal advice. Students and lawyers in the Calgary office:

  • Provide legal services for charitable and not for profit associations through the firm’s multifaceted pro bono program, that puts our legal expertise to work to help disadvantaged individuals and groups, or advancing social justice causes.
  • Act as pro bono counsel to a variety of organizations, advising unrepresented litigants in small claims court, volunteering in legal clinics for women and immigrants and sitting on the boards of charities and not-for-profit organizations.
  • Participate in Calgary Initiatives such as our popular Philanthropy Week and SEeing is Believing, as well as our volunteer matching donations program have an incredible response from lawyers, staff and students throughout the office.

Beyond Green sustainability program

The natural evolution of our commitment led us to introduce the Beyond Green sustainability program, which focuses on green initiatives, waste reduction and energy efficiency measures. Our dedication to environmental sustainability touches everything that we do. From the design of our offices to the way we communicate with clients, every effort is made to minimize our environmental footprint.

  • All Stikeman Elliott offices are BOMA BEST certified.
  • Our Calgary office has achieved a 10% overall reduction in CO2 emissions since 2013.
  • Waste diversion and energy efficiency initiatives have resulted in a 57% reduction in building operations.
  • The energy use for our Calgary office is approximately 15% lower than the provincial average for commercial and institutional facilities.
  • Through various recycling programs, the Calgary office made significant improvements in waste disposal in 2019.
  • As a firm, we have reduced our environmental footprint by 33% since 2008 and recently completed our fifth carbon footprint review to measure our progress.
