Articling Students

The Calgary office of Stikeman Elliott hires approximately 4 to 6 students for articles each year. Learn more about the student experience by exploring the Calgary careers pages.

First Year Summer Students

We typically hire up to three first year summer law students. Check back in the fall of 2020 for more information on the next first year summer student recruitment period in 2021.

Second Year Summer Students

We typically hire up to five second year summer students. Our second-year summer student recruitment period begins in the fall of 2020. Check with your law school for applicable application deadlines and interview schedules.

We only accept applications for summer law student positions through the viLaw Portal. The portal opens on August 10, 2020 for second year summer student applications. Please address your cover letters to the attention of:

Your application

Please include the following in your application:

  • Cover letter
  • Resume
  • Complete transcript of your law school and undergraduate marks
  • Mid-term marks (if available)
  • Copies of official transcripts from all post-secondary education programs attended
  • List of your anticipated upper-year courses/ list of upper-year courses being taken grading scale of law school (if available)
  • Your current email address

We understand that many schools instituted a pass/fail or credit system for marks as a result of the pandemic. If you have mid-terms marks available, please include those in your application as well. We are committed to reviewing your application holistically with this in mind.

We are also happy to receive reference letters, but they are not required. We do not require writing samples.

Communicating offers for student positions

Stikeman Elliott strictly follows the recruitment guidelines set by the Law Society of Alberta and, as such, we will not communicate that we are making an offer of an articling or summer student position to you prior to the date and time prescribed.
