Student Experience

A personalized approach

We make sure you reach your full potential by providing you with real world experience through assignments that are both interesting and offer an intellectual challenge. We give you the flexibility to explore all the practice areas we offer so that you can find your passion, grow your talents, and make an informed choice about your future. As a part of a leading Canadian firm for international business, you will be regularly involved in matters that originate outside of Canada, including high-profile cross-border and multinational deals.

As an articling or summer student, you will not have formal rotation schedules imposed on you. In keeping with our self-directed approach, work assignments are not funnelled through a central administrator but, instead, lawyers engage with you as colleagues when requesting work or assistance. You will be exposed to a variety of projects and experiences, all of which will contribute to your development into a well-rounded lawyer.

Career development

Our comprehensive training program offers an excellent grounding in core legal skills. Your work comes from a variety of sources: mentors, other lawyers or general work requests – not funnelled through a central administrator. We believe in learning by doing, and as you gain experience, you will be exposed to new challenges that will further develop the skills needed for a long and rewarding legal career.

As a student at Stikeman Elliott’s Calgary office, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Gain hands on experience with high-profile matters.
  • Explore practice areas that interest you through exposure to different lawyers and groups.
  • Receive both informal and formal mentoring and ongoing feedback from colleagues.
  • Provide input to enhance our work culture and training best practices.
  • Attend Canadian Bar Association (CBA) luncheons and other external courses that are relevant to your practice areas.
  • Participate in Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs that include in-house seminars taught by subject-matter experts.
  • Have access to industry-leading technology and knowledge management support.
  • As an articling student, travel to Toronto to benefit from our comprehensive orientation, through a two-day intensive training and skills workshop.

Student support and mentorship

Mentorship is a key to success at Stikeman Elliott. Each Calgary articling student is paired with a partner who serves as a principal, as well as an associate who acts as a mentor, while each summer student is matched with an associate mentor. Your mentor will be your initial point of contact for work assignments, and will offer in-depth coaching, support and career guidance. Students also tend to develop informal mentor relationships with other lawyers across the firm that align with their own interests and ambitions.

We empower you through offering robust support systems, as well as the necessary tools and autonomy to take control of your career. In addition to your principal and mentor(s), Ola Tundak, Director, Professional Resources, is always available to offer guidance and counsel. Whatever your questions, your colleagues throughout the office will always be happy to offer the benefit of their perspective on an informal basis.

Social events

There is a noticeable air of excitement around social events in the Calgary office. We think it’s important to bond with colleagues by having fun and reinforce our sense of community through celebrations of our achievements both big and small, including personalized Bar Call receptions for each of our articling students.

Our student program team, and the firm itself, plans a full calendar of social events, such as:

  • Holiday celebrations
  • Fundraisers and other charitable events
  • Organized sports games and leagues
  • Cooking classes
  • Team-building challenges
  • Impromptu social nights
  • A variety of client events in conjunction with the Calgary Stampede
  • Firm dinners
  • Afternoon social events
