Embodying the firm’s globalized outlook

Stikeman Elliott was the first Canadian law firm to open an office in London, in 1969. Although global law firms are a standard feature of today’s legal market, opening a London office was an audacious move for a young Canadian firm that, at the time, consisted of less than two dozen lawyers and was based solely in Montréal. In keeping with our grassroots beliefs, we have built an international presence without needing to merge with a global firm or scoop up smaller regional players.

Today, Stikeman Elliott is a globally recognized leader in Canadian law and the firm that clients call when it counts the most. In addition to our deep roots in the city, the London office also serves as the gateway for the firm’s Europe, India, Middle East, Africa, and sovereign wealth fund practices.

International corporate transactions with a Canadian component

Stikeman Elliott has long been recognized for our active practice in Canadian-focused international corporate transactions, multi-jurisdictional financing transactions and regulatory work. We have been involved in numerous international mergers & acquisitions transactions to and from Canada across a wide range of industries.

This extensive experience coordinating international corporate transactions includes:

  • MBOs
  • Leveraged buyouts
  • Privatisations
  • Takeover bids
  • Share and asset purchases
  • Private placements
  • Joint ventures

Members of the London office advise foreign companies, investment funds and sovereign wealth funds seeking to invest in Canada. We have particularly strong ties to globalized industries such as mining, energy, financial services, technology, and infrastructure — and regularly advise on all aspects of transaction processes, including initial tax planning considerations.

International debt and capital markets advisory services

Stikeman Elliott is a prominent international advisor in Eurobonds, global bonds, convertible bonds, CDOs, and other types of asset-backed finance structures, as well as repackaging programs and other forms of structured debt programs. Our lawyers have extensive experience in Euro commercial paper programs as well as international equity offerings and equity-linked products. Clients also regularly leverage our expertise regarding placing shares in UK and European offerings into Canada.

A substantial tax and private client practice

The London office advises an international clientele, including global private banks, governments and substantial private clients, on tax information exchange and financial regulation matters.

Strong ties to civic life in London

Stikeman Elliott firmly believes that individual passion is what makes the entire team a success, and that we exist to serve our clients and communities.

A sense of volunteerism is at the core of the firm’s culture, and lawyers are actively engaged in civic and charitable initiatives. Members of the London office have been instrumental in the survival and development of the Canada Club, London’s oldest speakers club. We are also a strong promoter of Canadian arts in the UK.
