Quebec’s leading law firm

Stikeman Elliott is the law firm of choice for sophisticated and complex matters. We have established longstanding ties to corporations operating in Quebec and around the world, and the quality of our legal expertise is regularly recognized by leading legal industry publications and surveys.

Proud to be founded in Montréal

Heward Stikeman and Fraser Elliott established their firm in 1952 in the Bank of Canada building at the foot of Beaver Hall Hill. These two young lawyers took a calculated risk leaving their established careers to start their own firm, and their actions set the foundation of the firm’s entrepreneurial culture. Some of our original clients are still with us and, today, the firm is still true to its grassroots culture. The Montréal office, like the firm itself, has always grown organically rather than through mergers, creating a strongly unified culture. Stikeman Elliott continues to follow the standards for service excellence and innovative thinking set by our founding partners.

A complete range of business law services

Clients appreciate knowing that, when it counts the most, they can count on us for practical, bespoke recommendations. Members of our Montréal office regularly advise on:

  • Mergers and acquisitions
  • Capital markets and securities
  • Banking and finance
  • Cross-border financial restructuring
  • International tax and commodity transactions
  • Real estate
  • Litigation and dispute resolution
  • Environmental law
  • Intellectual property
  • Information technology
  • Transportation
  • Insurance
  • Employment and labour

The Litigation & Dispute Resolution Group at the firm is widely recognized as one of the leading business law litigation teams in the country.

All Montréal lawyers are trained in the province’s civil law code, and many are also trained in common law. We are pleased to service our clients fluently in English and French and maintain a highly professional translation department, fully staffed with credentialed translators and several full-time lawyers.

A significant cross-border focus

Members of Stikeman Elliott’s Montréal office enjoy deep ties to the global business community – in fact, our clients are based in locations around the world. An expertise in civil law combined, with business law experience, is particularly valuable to international clients who have a corporate presence in Quebec. We also advise clients with operations in other civil law-based legal systems, such as Central and Eastern Europe and South America.

Deep ties to our local community

In addition to relationships within the Quebec business environment, Stikeman Elliott is proud to support local community-building efforts. The founders firmly believed that we exist to provide the very best service to our clients and communities and, to that end, all lawyers, students and staff are encouraged to volunteer their time with charitable organizations. We also regularly contribute to worthy causes championed by clients. Contributions are not simply financial, as members also donate their time and skills to a wide variety of local and regional organizations.
